SUPREME COURT RIPPLE EFFECTS: Manhattan DA Bragg Agrees To Delay Trump’s S

According to New York Times reporting, the Supreme Court ruled on presidents being immune from prosecution while carrying out “official acts” in office which has made prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office delay sentencing of former President Trump.

Former President Trump was convicted by a jury in Manhattan of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.  Because of the recent Supreme Court ruling, Alvin Bragg’s office has agreed to delay sentencing of the former president until arguments are heard regarding what constitutes a “official act” and if it relates in any way to his trial. The prosecutors granted the delay but claimed the motion by Trump’s attorney had no merit.

“Although we believe defendant’s arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file and his putative request to adjourn sentencing pending determination of his motion,” said Joshua Steinglass, the assistant district attorney in response to the motion filed by Trump’s attorneys.

Following the ruling from the Supreme Court, Trump’s legal team wrote to Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the trial, asking for permission to file a motion seeking to set aside the verdict.  Originally, Trump was to be sentenced only four days before the start of the Republican National Convention on July 11th, but has now been delayed until the end of the July or later.

The Trump legal team said they would submit their filings on July 10th which Bragg’s office agreed to respond to in a two week time frame, but Judge Juan Merchan has yet to agree to any schedule change.
