Wayne County Woman Dies in Trooper Custody

State Police are investigating the death of a Wayne County woman who became unresponsive after being arrested yesterday for child endangerment.

The department says 37-year-old Marchelle Sharkey from the Town of Ontario was arrested on three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Troopers and Child Protective Services charged her after a child welfare investigation at a home on Hennessey Road in Walworth.

CPS reported finding multiple children left unattended without adult supervision or food.

Sharkey was taken into custody and taken to the Wayne County Jail, but fell unconscious while riding in the patrol car.

Troopers administered Narcan and tried to rescusitate her with a defibrillator, but she was pronounced dead after being rushed to the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of death.

Both State Police and the New York Attorneiy General's Office are investigating.
