Canandaigua Judge Suspended for Alleged Racist Remarks

The state’s highest court has suspended a Canandaigua judge with pay, even as he fights his removal from office.

The State Commission on Judicial Conduct says 81-year-old Walter Jones told a racist story to attorneys outside the courtroom, used a racial slur, and made inappropriate remarks about a Black defendant.

His attorney argues the punishment is excessive and says Jones should be allowed to remain on the bench while his appeal is under review.
