State lawmakers in Albany are reconvening today to approve a second budget extender. The legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul missed the April 1 budget deadline, necessitating this additional measure to keep the government operational and ensure state workers receive their pay. This new extender is expected to last for one week, as reported by Spectrum News.
Governor Hochul expressed optimism on Monday (April 6) about reaching a budget agreement soon. The ongoing negotiations are centered around key issues such as reforming car insurance laws, school aid, and pension reform. These discussions have delayed the budget, with significant differences still unresolved, according to LeadingAge NY.
The first budget extender, passed on March 31, ensured government operations continued through April 7. The new extender aims to provide additional time for negotiations, considering the religious observances of Passover and Easter, as noted by WHEC.
Governor Hochul's proposed fiscal year 2027 executive budget totals over $260 billion, with significant allocations for the Department of Health and the State Education Department. The legislature will continue to work towards a final budget agreement, with the possibility of further extenders if needed.
