Starting Monday (March 16), New York State will enforce its annual spring burn ban, which will remain in effect through May 14, 2026. The ban aims to prevent wildfires by prohibiting open burning during this period.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the ban specifically restricts the burning of sticks, branches, brush, refuse, trash, tires, and other waste materials. Burning loose leaves or chemically treated wood is also prohibited.

However, some exceptions exist. Small campfires, cooking fires, and ceremonial bonfires are allowed, provided they are under three feet in height and four feet in diameter. These fires must only burn charcoal or clean, dry, untreated wood.

Residents are reminded that burning trash is illegal in all circumstances. For more information, contact the New York State DEC or your local fire department.
