Rochester Murder Suspect Arrested in North Carolina

Rochester Police say they've found the suspect who murdered a 65-year-old Rochester man back in June, and he's in custody on unrelated murder charges in North Carolina.

They say 22-year-old parole absconder Jaheim Bennett stabbed 65-year-old landlord Israel Vega at a building on Costar Street.

Vega owned the building and lived in a ground-floor apartment. Bennett had been allowed to stay in an upstairs apartment while the usual resident was out of town.

Police say he got into a fight with Vega and stabbed him several dozen times. Bennett fled Rochester, and the killing was not discovered until the upstairs tenant came home and found the body.

On September 11th, police learned that Bennett had shot another person to death in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Bennett had been paroled in March. Within days he allegedly shot someone in New York City, robbed someone in Yonkers, and eventually killed Israel Vega in Rochester.
