UPDATE 9/4: The Monroe County Sheriffs have released the name of the man who died in the Erie Canal Tuesday as part of a police chase.
56-year-old Reginald Russel was recovered from the canal earlier this week.
UPDATE: The driver has been identified as 42-year-old Ryan Armstrong. He's charged with manslaughter.
Original story:
One suspect is dead, after a U-Haul truck crashed into the Erie Canal.
Deputies say two men stole several items from the Brockport Walgreens shortly after dinnertime.
They then allegedly sped away, leading a chase that ended when the truck plunged into the canal near Sans Souci Canal Park.
Deputy Brendan Hurley says one suspect swam out of the truck and was arrested, but the second struggled and eventually went under the water.
The body was later recovered.
There's no ID yet on the dead man.
Charges against the other suspect haven't been announced yet.
