Gov. Hochul Orders Officers Fired in Greece Man's Prison Death

UPDATE: Some corrections officers are soon to be out of a job, after a Monroe County man died after an alleged assault at a Utica-area prison.

Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered that 14 state corrections employees involved in the death of Robert Brooks be fired.

Prison staff allegedly beat Brooks while he was handcuffed on December 10th and he died the next day at a hospital in Utica.

Attorney General Letitia James says there is video of the attack on inmate Brooks -- and it'll soon be released to the public.

The corrections officer union says the video is incomprehensible, and the state corrections department says it could make prison conditions more hostile throughout the state.

Original story:

The Greece man who died at a Utica-area prison last week was allegedly handcuffed while corrections officers assaulted him.

That's what sources told our Bob Lonsberry, and the Albany Times-Union has now confirmed that reporting.

And the Times-Union confirms there is body camera footage.

43-year-old Robert Brooks of Greece died last Tuesday at a hospital, following the incident at Marcy Correctional Facility.

Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for 1st-degree assault, in the stabbing of his girlfriend in 2016.

13 officers at the prison are now suspended without pay, and the state Attorney General's Office is investigating.
