6 Accused of Stealing, Reselling Used Cooking Oil

Federal prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted six people for conspiring to steal and re-sell restaurant cooking oil.

Three of the accused are from Pittsford, and three from New York City.

All are charged with conspiracy to transport and sell stolen goods in interstate commerce, which could earn them up to five years in prison.

Guodeng Chen, Didi Huang and Fangfang Yan are from Pittsford.

Ruimao Yang, Yan Han, and Wen Xiao Zhang are from New York.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says they stole the used oil from numerous restaurants around Monroe County.

The used oil can be refined into biodiesel fuel, and typically sells for four-to-five-dollars per gallon.

The Pittsford defendants drove trucks to the various restaurants and siphoned the oil from their storage tanks.

The New York City contingent arranged for it to be sold to a refinery in Pennsylvania.

They made two shipments, each containing more than 45,000 pounds of stolen oil to the refinery in Erie, Pennsylvania, before they were caught.
