Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker, underwent hip replacement surgery on Saturday (December 14) following a fall during a congressional trip to Luxembourg. The 84-year-old Democrat from California is recovering well, according to her spokesperson, Ian Krager.

"Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend," Krager said in a statement. "Speaker Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness.

Pelosi was part of a bipartisan delegation commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when she tripped on marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg City. After the fall, Pelosi was initially treated at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg. She was then transported by helicopter to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a major military hospital known for treating U.S. troops injured in combat. Krager expressed Pelosi's gratitude for the excellent care she received from both the U.S. military staff and the medical professionals in Luxembourg.

Pelosi, who is serving her 20th term in Congress, remains a significant figure in the Democratic Party despite stepping down from House leadership in 2023. She continues to advocate for quality healthcare access for all Americans. The incident occurred just days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell experienced a fall at the U.S. Capitol.

Pelosi's office has received an outpouring of well-wishes, and she looks forward to returning to the United States soon.
