Congressman Joseph's Morelle's communciation director has been arrested on Capitol Grounds, after security scans found ammunition in his bag
A statement from the US Capitol Police confirms that 38-year-old Michael Hopkins is facing charges for unlawful possession of ammunition, including one charge for possession of a high-capacity magazine.
After the x ray allegedly showed the ammo, officers conducted a hand search of the bag and say they found four ammunition magazines and eleven rounds of ammunition.
The police statement quotes Hopkins as telling officers that he forgot the ammunition was in the bag.
In a late afternoon statement the Rochester Congressman's office said Hopkins had been fired.
Axios reports this is the second time in three years that a congressional staffer has been arrested and charged for possessing ammunition at the Capitol.
The last incident was a year ago this month and triggered a lot of discussion of Capitol security.
In that incident, Capitol Police took 12 minutes to locate the staffer, who had a handgun in his bag, according to Axios.
