Governor Hochul is bragging about a 39 percent year-over-year drop in shootings in Rochester for the first eight months of the year.
But that's not the whole story.
Our analysis of public Rochester Police data shows shootings are down sharply from last year, but still 42 percent higher than in 2019, the last full year before the COVID pandemic.
Hochul credits a recent drop statewide on what she calls significant, sustained reductions in communities served by police departments participating in the Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative.
