About 1800 members of the service workers unions at the University of Rochester are staging a 17-hour strike today.
The latest round of negotiations failed to produce an agreement on a new contract.
The last contract expired at the end of October.
The unions claim the university has not bargained in good faith.
The university says it has plans to operate today without disruption.
