Monroe County Overdose Deaths Rise

The final numbers are in for last year, and the Monroe County Medical Examiner reports 406 people died in the county from opioid and cocaine overdoses.

253 of those involved both drugs.

93 involved only opioids and 60 involved only cocaine.

Overall, opioid deaths were up 14 percent from 2021 and cocaine deaths were up 34 percent.

African-Americans were about a third of those who died, even though they represent 17 percent of the county's population

Health commissioner Michael Mendoza says the numbers show cocaine should not be viewed by drug users as a safer alternative to fentanyl.

Meantime, fentanyl and heroin overdoses have gone up each of the last three years.
