Former Wegmans Employee Sentenced for Stealing $578,000

A former Wegmans employee will serve a year in federal prison after being convicted of wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors say 48-year-old Alicia Torres of Webster misused Wegmans' online prescription system to fraudulently process more than 350 credit card refund requests in customers' names.

She then tricked the pharmacists on duty to sign off on the fake refund requests and used the Wegmans point of sale system to transfer the money onto her own bank card.

Authorities say Torres stole more than $568,000 this way while working for Wegmans between 2014 and earlier this year when she was caught by the FBI.

She also stole nearly $11,000 more in Wegmans gift cards.

Torres will have to pay more than 578-thousand-dollars in restitution as well as serve time in prison.
