Former Fire Chief Accused of Stealing $16k From Fire Company

A former fire chief in Border City, near Waterloo, is facing state charges for the alleged theft of $16,000 from the fire company.

The state Comptroller's Office says John Morabito siphoned the money from a fire company bank account over six years, ending in 2021.

He allegedly made $2,000 in purchases for himself on a fire company credit card.

Morabito was arrested last week and is charged with grand larceny.

His next court date is October 25.
