SCOTUS to Take Up Challenge to New State Gun Law

The Supreme Court will take up a legal challenge to New York's new gun safety law.

Justice Clarence Thomas has called for an emergency conference on the law for next Friday.

It comes after Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued an order rejecting an attempt to halt the new law earlier this month.

Governor Hochul says she believes the law will ultimately remain in place.

The new laws require people buying guns and ammo to pay for their Instant Criminal Background checks and will allow the state to build a database of the guns and ammo that people buy.

The previously free background checks now cost $9 for guns and $2.50 for ammo.

State police conduct the checks, not the federal authorities.
