UPDATE: Trooper, Suspect Names Released in Fatal Gates Shooting

UPDATE: State police have released the names of the trooper involved, and the man he shot and killed, Sunday night in Gates.

Trooper Dominic Cato shot 35-year-old Daniel Legler of Chili, after Legler allegedly fired a round at Cato.

It happened after Legler crashed his car at the end a high speed chase on 490 and 531.

State Police Lieutenant Samuel Spezio says Trooper Cato had no choice but to fire his weapon.

The state Attorney General's office is investigating, as required by law in any case where a police officer uses deadly force.

State police are confirming the use of deadly force by a trooper in Gates.

They say an unidentified man led police on a chase last night from 490 near Innovative Field to the Rochester Technology Park.

The man then allegedly tried to run away, then fired a single shot at the trooper who was trying to arrest him.

The trooper then opened fire on the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The state Attorney General's office is investigating, as required by law in any case where a police officer causes a death.
