Local Leaders Respond to Possible Rochester Casino

There's already pushback on a possible Seneca Nation casino for Rochester.

Reports surfaced late Friday that the Seneca Gaming Compact being negotiated with the state would include a casino in the city.

Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart yesterday proposed a resolution opposing the siting of a casino in Monroe County.

She argues a casino will not create new wealth, employment or tourism.

She's proposing that the county should conduct an independent study of the potential effects of a casino locally before any casino is approved.

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans says no one at City Hall or in the local state delegation has been involved in any discussion about a potential casino for Rochester.

He says any conversation about a Rochester casino that doesn't include local stakeholders is unacceptable.

Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce head Bob Duffy says the Chamber has taken no formal position for, or against, a potential Rochester casino.

Duffy says he'd be surprised if a casino will be allowed in Rochester or Monroe County without the support of local lawmakers.
