Student Loan Forgiveness Recipients in the State Will Get a Tax Break

The state Senate has passed a bill giving a tax break to people who are granted forgiveness for their student loan debt.

Sponsors of the bill say forgiveness of the debt should not be a cash grab for the state. Under the bill, the forgiven amount would not be taxable.

The Biden administration said last year it would forgive up to $10,000 in student loan debt for most borrowers, and up to $20,000 for those who had Pell grants. The plan is still being challenged in the courts.
