Audit: NYS Thruway Authority Shorted $276 Million in Tolls, Fees

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has found billing and toll collection problems at the Thruway Authority that are to blame for $276 million in uncollected tolls and fees.

Those debts have been handed over to a collection agency, but DiNapoli says the Thruway can do a better job going forward.

The audit found problems with the imaging of license plates.

Eleven percent of tags in images that were rejected as unreadable were in fact identifiable and billable.

And DiNapoli says the Thruway can make more frequent use of registration suspensions for vehicles that repeatedly don't pay their bills.
