Area Doctor Acquitted in Fatal Opioid Overdose

A bench trial has ended in a not guilty verdict for a doctor who was accused of causing a patient to overdose on opioids.

Sudipt Deshmukh was acquitted of charges that included manslaughter, reckless endangerment, drug crimes, and healthcare fraud.

Prosecutors had claimed he overprescribed opioids to patients for over a decade, knowing his patients were already addicted to them.

One of those patients fatally overdosed in 2015.

Deshmukh was fired from Rochester Regional Health in 2020, after his medical license was suspended.
