A Basic Income Program for New Mothers May Soon Be Available in Rochester

A nonprofit organization that began a guaranteed basic income program for new mothers in New York City plans to expand the program to Rochester.

As first reported by Bloomberg News, it's called The Bridge Project.

The Monarch Foundation gives the mothers $1,000 per month for 18 months and $500 per month for another 18 months.

Organizers say the payments ease child poverty, and they hope to demonstrate to state lawmakers the worthiness of a statewide program funded with tax money.

The City of Rochester is developing its own taxpayer-supported guaranteed basic income program that would pay $500 per month to needy families.
