Lawmakers are Close To a Deal on Bail Reform in New York State

A breakthrough on changes to bail reform could be close.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins told reporters yesterday she, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, and Governor Hochul are "close to a general agreement."

Hochul has been seeking to remove the least restrictive" standard for judges when setting bail for certain crimes.

Bail reform has been one of the major stumbling blocks to a budget agreement, along with affordable housing and minimu wage.

Stewart-Cousins also said she believes an overall budget deal could be coming soon.

It was due April 1st, but lawmakers passed another 7-day budget extender Monday
