Governor Hochul Vetoes Grieving Families Act

Governor Hochul has vetoed the so-called Grieving Families Act.

The bill would have updated the state's wrongful death law to allow plaintiffs to sue for more than just economic losses resulting from the death of a family member.

And it would have expanded the beneficiaries, the categories of damages and the statute of limitations.

But in her veto message, the governor says the bill was passed without a serious evaluation of the unintended consequences for the economy, small businesses and the health care system.

She wants lawmakers to pass a bill that isn't as broad.
