Monroe County Executive Adam Bello has released a new design for redrawing Monroe County Legislature districts.
The redistricting plan guarantees six majority-Black election districts mainly in the City of Rochester.
Bello says it was worked out with Legislature President Sabrina LaMar and the Legislature Republicans who favored a similar plan.
Bello vetoed an earlier plan approved mainly by Legislature Democrats that had five Black-majority districts and that Democrats thought was a better fit with the Federal Voting Rights Act.
Bello says this compromise plan cuts across fewer municipal borders and fewer neighborhood boundaries, better ensuring that those communities have a voice in the legislature.
Democrat Rachel Barnhart says it's the same map Republicans were working on, except with what she called "changes to hurt enemies and protect friends."
County Executive Bello says talks on this new plan will continue
