City Council Members Ask Hochul to Set New Bail Standards for Gun Crimes

Five Democrats on the Rochester City Council have signed a letter to Governor Hochul, urging her to support a dangerousness standard for bail for gun crimes.

The letter notes that Chamber of Commerce head Bob Duffy urged something similar in a letter to the governor in July.

Under their proposal, judges would have discretion to deny bail to people charged with gun crimes if the judge believes they would pose a danger to the community if released.

The standard would apply only to suspects already prohibited from owning guns.

The signees, however, say they are not asking for a change to the bail reform law.

The letter was signed by Council President Miguel Melendez, and members Michael Patterson, Willie Lightfoot, LaShay Harris and Jose Peo.
