Legislation Introduced to Change Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day

A state Assembly Democrat from Brooklyn has introduced legislation ending the state's holiday honoring Christopher Columbus.

Under the proposal, it would be replaced with “Indigenous People’s Day and would celebrate indigenous resistance to colonial oppression.

The bill could be considered in the legislative session that begins in January. Italian heritage organizations oppose the change.

In New York City, the holiday is already celebrated as Italian American Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day.
