Rochester Man Gets 25-to-Life in Hatchet Murder

A 22-year-old Rochester man is headed to state prison for 25-to-life for killing a woman with a hatchet.

Joseph Rivera Jr. was convicted last month in the death of Heather Majors.

She was struck with 77 blows from the hatchet at what her mother said was a boarding house on Chili Avenue.

Rivera and Majors were not in a relationship.

Police started looking at Rivera as a possible suspect while he was being held in jail for parole violations.

He was released under the new parole reform law, before he could be charged with Majors' murder.
