Many schools open today, and the New York Association for Pupil Transportation is making a very important request of drivers.
The agency is asking drivers not to pass stopped school buses that are displaying flashing red lights. Doing so is illegal, and puts the safety of students at risk.
Penalties for first-time offenders include a fine of up to 400-dollars, five points on their license and the possibility of 30 days in jail.
Repeat offenders face larger fines, longer jail terms, and the revocation of their license.
Suburban school districts in Monroe County can opt in to a program to get cameras that will photograph the license plate of cars that pass stopped buses.
