Governor Hochul is condemning the attack on author Salman Rushdie.
Rushdie was stabbed Friday during a speaking appearance at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York.
His condition is said to be improving and he has been taken off a ventilator.
Suspect Hadi Matar -- of Fairview, New Jersey -- pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges and is being held without bail.
