RPD Officer Killed in Bauman St. Ambush

UPDATE: Police have arrested a Boston area man for the shooting death of Rochester Police Officer Mazurkiewicz last night.

Chief David Smith says multiple charges have been filed against the 21-year-old suspect, Kelvin Vickers.

Those charges include 2nd-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and gun crimes.

Captain Frank Umbrino says Vickers crept up on the undercover officers as they were attempting to gain intelligence on a murder suspect.

Officers from the city, state, county, and suburban departments quickly threw up a perimeter around the scene, and soon found evidence of a break-in at an abandoned house.

They found Vickers hiding in a crawl space in a nearby house less than an hour after the shooting.

Police say Vickers is from Boston, Massachusetts, but they wouldn't comment on why he was in Rochester.

They do say six search warrants were served in raids overnight that recovered nine guns and several hundred pounds of marijuana.

They haven't said how those are linked to the murder of officer Mazurkiewicz and the wounding of officer Sino (see-noh) Seng.

Original story:

Two Rochester police officers were shot Thursday evening in an ambush incident on Bauman Street. One of the two police veterans has reportedly died.

Police Lt. Greg Bello says both officers were working on a detail in plainclothes when a man approached and opened fire on them. Sources say at least one officer was able to return fire. Mayor Malik Evans said earlier that one officer was critically wounded, and he asked for prayers on behalf of both men and their families.

One officer was taken to Rochester General and the other to Strong Memorial Hospital.

There’s a major police presence and the area around Bauman Street remains blocked off early Friday morning.

This officer death comes not quite eight years after the last death of an officer in the line of duty, Officer Daryl Pierson, who was fatally shot while chasing a suspect on Hudson Avenue in September of 2014. It also comes about 12 hours after Mayor Evans declared a gun violence emergency in Rochester.
