1st Monroe County Monkeypox Case Confirmed, Several More Suspected

Monroe County Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza says there's one confirmed case of monkeypox in the county, but several others are suspected.

Mendoza says we'll likely see community spread of monkeypox in the county.

He says health officials are expecting demand for the monkeypox vaccine to ramp up.

Patterns of exposure globally show men who have sex with men are at higher risk of contracting the virus.

Health officials say you should avoid skin-to-skin contact with sex partners or others who have a rash or other monkeypox-related symptoms.

Monkeypox is spread through direct contact with sores, contact with clothing or fabrics used by someone with monkeypox, or by respiratory droplets.
