Mayor Evans Wants City Police to Step Up Enforcement of Illegal Gatherings

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans is asking city police to step up enforcement of illegal gatherings -- such as the one early yesterday morning where four people were shot.

And he wants anyone who hears about plans for such a gathering to call 9-1-1.

Twenty-four-year-old Willie Wofford was killed, and three other people were wounded during a fight outside the Baden Street Recreation Center.

Evans says more than 300 people had gathered there for a party.

The hostility of the crowd prevented an ambulance crew from safely getting to Wofford. Police in a patrol car drove him to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

The other shooting victims are recovering.

No one has been arrested.

Police say Wofford had a criminal record, and had been shot several years ago.
