A Rochester Council Committee Recommends Measures for Two City Holidays

A Rochester City Council committee has recommended the full council approve two measures affecting holidays in the city.

One establishes Juneteenth as an official city holiday -- commemorating the day enslaved people in Texas learned they had been liberated by the Union in the Civil War.

Mayor Malik Evans says a community celebration will be held June 20th.

The second measure would change Columbus Day in October to "Indigenous Peoples Day". The day would acknowledge atrocities, genocide and land disposession against native Americans .
