The Monroe County Health Department says the Avian Flu has been found in a backyard flock of chickens and ducks being kept in the county. Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza says the disease doesn't present an immediate health concern to humans, but anyone with backyard poultry and game hunters who come into contact with wild waterfowl or turkeys should take precautions not to spread the disease.
Songbirds don't appear to get the disease, so backyard bird feeders are safe.
Dr. Mendoza says the backyard flock of birds was euthanized after being quarantined. People who keep flocks of domestic fowl should be sure they're kept away from wild ducks and geese and their droppings.
