An audit by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office has confirmed that the state health department undercounted COVID-related deaths in nursing homes by at least 4,100.
The report confirms the conclusion of a report by the Attorney General's office early last year that also found an undercount.
A spokesman for former Governor Cuomo says the Comptroller's report is not news, and he questioned the timing of the audit.
The report also found the state was unprepared before the pandemic to respond to infectious disease outbreaks at nursing homes.
The audit says more staff and information systems could have helped limit the spread of COVID at nursing homes.
