Some Sex Offenders Can Resume Use of Internet

Albany, N.Y. -- A legal settlement will allow many registered sex offenders to access the internet and social media without restrictions.

As first reported by ABC10 in Albany, the settlement ends a legal case brought two years ago by the New York Civil Liberties Union and Prisoner Legal Services of New York.

They said the state's limits on internet use by sex offenders should not apply to offenders who did not use the internet for their crime. And the groups argued that the limits violated free speech rights.

Restrictions on internet use can continue for sex offenders when there is a risk its use could lead to another crime.
