Some parents around the country and locally kept their children home from school today...and school districts took extra precautions...all over a Tik Tok video that made a presumably fake threat of a "National Shoot up Your School Day."
But incidents like this aren't harmless, according to school-based Therapist Thahara Thavakumar with Genesee Valley Mental Health. She's based in East Rochester Schools. Thavakumar says add the stress from news coverage of the threat...to news coverage of school shootings....to the fact that the pandemic isn't over and schools still aren't back to normal...and you have a recipie that can affect children's sleep and ability to learn.
Thavakumar says children of all ages will ask questions about things like the Tik Tok threat and school lockdown drills. she says parents should remind them that lots of people are working to keep them safe.
