Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, the school superintendent, and the school board president have issued a joint statement outlining steps to boost safety in the schools.
They've agreed to have city police outside the city's high schools during arrival and dismissal times for the next week. The school board will consider funding a police presence through November 19.
Meantime, City Hall and the school district will develop a plan to use the City’s Pathways to Peace program, Person in Crisis Teams, and Office of Neighborhood Safety to provide support and services to students in crisis. That plan will have to be approved by the City Council and the district.
District employee unions have asked that the district resume using armed school resource officers.
