Afghan Refugees Bound for Rochester

New York Governor Kathy Hochul says the state will be welcoming as many as 1,143 Afghan refugees who were evacuated during the Kabul airlift last month.

The governor says she's been informed by the State Department that the resettlements should take place over the next six months in communities around the state. Hochul says that's appropriate, given New York's history of welcoming those seeking a safe haven from violence and persecution. She says New York State is more than willing to answer and welcome our new Afghan friends with open arms.

Some 200 of the Afghans are to be settled in Rochester, more than 300 in Buffalo and others in Albany, Syracuse, Utica and New York City.
