Cuomo Declares Gun Violence Emergency

Governor Andrew Cuomo is declaring gun violence a "disaster emergency" in New York, by way of executive order.

This is the first time such a move has been made in the U.S.

Cuomo says it indicates how urgent the situation is.

He listed a number of policies associated with this order, including a long-term goal to increase job opportunities, improve police-community relations, and install more anti-violence programs.

Cuomo also compared gun violence to COVID-19, saying in the short term, officials need to map where shootings happen, and then crack down on clusters.

Finally, a State Police task force will be formed toward stopping illegal guns from entering the state at its borders.
