Schumer Apologizing for Using "Slur" to Describe Mentally Disabled Children

Senator Schumer's office is apologizing for his use of a word, that is now considered a slur, to describe children with mental disabilities.

It came during his remarks on a New York City Housing Authority podcast.

He was specifically discussing community pushback against a planned group home he supported for children he called "retarded."

His office says he is sorry for using "outdated and hurtful language."
