New Mental Health Emergency Phone Line In The Works

State lawmakers are looking at creating a new phone number for people to report mental health emergencies.

Instead of calling 9-1-1, citizens would call 9-8-8. People experiencing a mental health crisis would go to a mental health urgent care site, instead of a hospital.

Federal stimulus funds could cover the costs at first.

The new phone number could be ready by the end of the year.
