Bail Scammers Arrested

Two Florida men are under arrest after running a bail scam in Monroe County.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 18-year-old Jamel Aciego and 20-year-old Victor Lopez began scamming elderly Western New York residents. They would call a victim, tell them they were a relative who'd been involved in a car crash and needed bail money. Then a fictitious police officer would get on the phone and explain how to send the money. A "courier" would then arrive at the victim's home to take the cash.

The MSCO says they scammed at least five people since March 22nd, taking more than $106,000.

On Thursday a victim reported an attempt to scam her out of $13,500. Deputies watched outside her home in Pittsford as Aciego and Lopez arrived. They arrested Aciego after a fight, but Lopez took off in a car before crashing into a swamp on Fellows Road in Penfield. He was arrested after being treated at Strong Memorial Hospital.
