RCSD Superintendent Condemns Violence Near Schools

Rochester School Superintendent Lesli Myers-Small says over the past several months, her students have been subjected to trauma on a daily basis from violence. She says the numbers are staggering.

In her weekly message to the community, Myers-Small says eight schools have shifted into lockout mode due to nearby gun violence over the past several months. She says several students have been arrested, and two were injured by stray bullets while sitting in their homes watching TV with their families. Five young people were assaulted in their own neighborhoods. Several students have been arrested, 13 injured as a result of gun violence and six died. She says there has even been a shooting at dismissal time outside one school with children playing in the area.

Myers-Small is calling on all business, religious and non-profit agencies that deal with children to redouble their efforts to connect with and support children. She concludes "this has to stop."
