A new snow leopard cub has been born at the Seneca Park Zoo.
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello says the birth came on Friday to Timila, the zoo's four-year-old snow leopard. The new cub is a male and is being raised by hand after his mother failed to bond with him. Zoo staff are working with national authorities on a survival plan for the cub.
Hand-raised wild animals are at high risk for illness. The cub is getting round the clock care. Zoo Director of Animal Health Dr. Louis DiVincenti said Timila is healthy and her behavior appears normal, but she was not caring for the cub, so the decision was made to remove it from her.
