Rochester Man Faces Tax Fraud Charges

A Rochester man is facing federal charges for allegedly submitting false tax documents to the IRS.

Federal prosecutors say Eugene Jamar Thomas falsely reported income and withholdings to the IRS in 2015 and 2016, claiming to be entitled to millions of dollars in tax refunds.

In 2015, he was issued a refund of nearly $500,000.

Prosecutors say when the IRS learned it had issued an inaccurate refund, they advised Thomas to file an amended 2015 tax return and repay the money.

He didn’t -- and again filed false tax documents in 2016.

If convicted, Thomas could spend five years behind bars and have to pay a 250 thousand dollar fine.
