U.S. Education Dept. Rejects NYS Request to Skip State Assessments

The U.S. Department of Education has rejected New York’s request to skip this year's state assessments.

State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa says she's deeply disappointed by the decision. She says canceling the exams would be the fair thing to do, in light of the pandemic.

Students learning remotely won't be required to take the assessments, but Rosa says those are the students who benefit the most from them.

She says that means the interpretation of the results this year will be meaningless.
