West Main Shooting Victim Identified

The Monroe County Medical Examiner has identified the man shot and killed early Wednesday morning on West Main Street as 29-year-old Tyshon Jones of Gates.

Rochester police say they've learned that Jones, who lived with his mother in Gates, was taken to a shelter in the city Tuesday afternoon by Gates Police. He told them he was homeless after a citizen bought food for him, then called the Gates PD because Jones was walking around with no shoes on.

Gates police took Jones to the local homeless shelter after buying him a pair of shoes. They say at no time did he exhibit any signs of being a danger to himself or others.

The timeline put together by Rochester police finds Jones left the shelter about 11:30 p.m. He spent the next three hours wandering along West Avenue, Chili Avenue, Main Street and Downtown Rochester. About 2:20 he entered a residential building on East Broad Street and building security called police, but Jones left as they arrived. He then wandered across downtown until he reached the Open Door Mission shortly before 3:00 a.m.

It was there that he took a knife from inside the mission and caused a disturbance that led to police being called. He was ultimately shot and killed by Rochester Police after advancing on them and refusing to drop the knife.
